There are some nice touches like the heckler outside of the penalty box, but next year’s version might be the one in need of a fan upgrade. While it’s still a lively virtual bunch, it’s beginning to lose its shine and edge over crowds like the one we see in MLB The Show. If there is an area of the game that could use a touch-up on the visual side, it’s the crowd. Whether you’re looking for simulation action in EASHL or something more arcade flavored in the other options, the opportunities are there. Each mode in the game is different enough to create a unique experience that sets Ones apart from Pro-Am, Threes, and the EASHL. It matches the inclusive gaming culture EA has been embracing. It’s nice that you can again create a male or a female in the game. The series already boasted more ways to play online, couch and vs. In fact, it has added enough layers to nearly rival NBA 2K as one of the most jam-packed options on the sports video game market. When you mix in EASHL, which has gotten progressively better over the past few years, thanks to feedback from hardcore competitive players, the World of CHEL is second only to 2K's Neighborhood when it comes to creating a multi-layered online sports gaming environment.ĭepth is not an issue for NHL 19. The action doesn’t seem quite as fast as Threes, but it’s still quicker than the sim modes. Pro-Am is probably the best blend of arcade and simulation across the entire game. Playing with friends will be where that game mode really shines, but it might not ever appeal to hardcore fans. It’s not my favorite of the CHEL modes, but I do like the presence of that feature because it adds balance. Threes is completely over-the-top and it feels like it’s twice as fast as a regular game. It almost felt like a competitive skills drill, even though there are some arcadey elements.

The smaller playing area helped teach me how to maneuver in tight scoring spots. I also found it to be good training for other areas of the game. The quarter rink and fast-paced action offer a great alternative to the more traditional simulated hockey in other modes. Loot boxes and pay-to-win is a major controversy in gaming these days, but there is enough natural progression from simply playing the game to keep fans from being turned off. I’m not a major fan of it most times in the genre, but it didn’t bother me in NHL 19. The skill additions make sense and the loadout approach works better in this game than in any other sports game. Your player constantly gets rewarded for playing smart and penalized for performing poorly. Progression System is Logical and Easy on the Wallet Allowing basic menu navigation is the best approach at this stage. The open-world concept in a sports game needs to be grander if it is to be an actual asset to the overall experience. The World of CHEL is the biggest new addition to the game, and it functions a lot like NBA 2K’ s Neighborhood or overall M圜areer setup, only there is no virtual area to roam. I think this year’s game forces you to use all of your defensive tools more than others. Poke checks aren’t out of control as they were in a previous version, but still, an effective way to stop an offensive player’s progress. The balance between offense and defense is good.
That might seem like a small thing, but the authenticity creates a buy-in from the gamer. The animation that was triggered was appropriately toned down from the ones I saw with a more square, between-the-shoulders check. There were a few hits that clipped just a shoulder and an arm.
It’s also good to see that the angle by which the contact is made is a factor in the collision. When you really connect with a body check that flattens an opponent, you can feel the impact, and that’s the kind of dopamine that should be present in all sports video games. That’s an issue that appears to have been resolved. A few years back, the hitting didn’t feel as satisfying as it should have.
